RG8x connectors

I have finally moved into my new house with it prewired with 4 X RG8X cables to the attic.  While I was researching PL259 / SO239 connectors, I believe that RG8X are not equal to RG58 connectors. I found these at R&L

It does not say if these are crimp or solder, but I assume they are solder.

Since I have never made any connections, I figure I need to practice on a length of cable before trying the real thing on cable wired into the attic and my office. I would appreciate any tips, links, etc for:

1) Stripping the wire properly. I already have this stripper and I *think* it will work on RG8X using the RT6 setting. I've tried it and it cuts the outer braided wire too much. I can shorten the rear cutter and it should work out.

2) Solder versus crimp?

3) How to test continuity on a long run of cables. I have OHM/Volt/current meter somewhere in a box. ;-) I am just not sure what the proper test procedure is.

4) Any other suggestions/tips (heat shrink wrap fittings inside the house? Anything I am neglecting?)

A PL259 is the connector that you use and a soldered on PL259 is the way to do the job BEST. The RG8X coax uses a sleeve that is ordered separately to properly fit the PL259.

Use a standard or silver plated PL259 (silver plate is easier to solder to):


and  the RG8X sleeve adapter(REDUCER)

And to TEST the connectors you can use an OHM METER and check for continuity across the connector and their should be no resistance measured (INFINITE OHMS) next is to JUMPER a resistor or just a wire across the other end connector and you should measure low ohms,like almost a short.
The coax is no ready to connect the antenna and run an SWR test. You need an SWR/POWER meter .

I always use a self fusing silicon tape to seal for weather to prevent corrosion and moisture from entering and causing corrosion. The self fusing silicon ,often called SUPER TAPE or EXTREME TAPE is great stuff though I often also cover the super tape with good quality electrical tape to protect from UV and other degradation of the silicon.
