Want to know if your plant will grow?
« on: June 05, 2009, 09:56:58 AM »
I stumbled across this handy site today. It's put out by the Canadian government, but covers the US, too. It's a reasonably detailed map of where species should be able to grow based on temperature with or without watering.

Here's the link for potato: http://planthardiness.gc.ca/ph_spp_intro.pl?lang=en&speciesid=1005706

It should give you an idea if you can grow a plant outdoors in your area without watering, or if you can get away with it if you water.

If you can't find the plant you want, try using the species name.

Very cool resource - BUT it says we shouldn't be able to grow any potatoes here due to both temp and precip.  Guess I better go break the bad news to the 16 potato plants growing about 3" vertical per day in the back yard.

You can add that info to the site. It's not perfect :)

What a good resource! Thank you!  ColdHaven and I have been growing lots of different klinds of plants in pots on our porch and I have been trying to find a good site like this one. =)
