Well I did it ,,, This is Kxxxxx listening !
« on: July 26, 2017, 01:12:59 AM »
I  had thought of getting my technician for a while, and finally got it done!  I picked up a Baofeng HT and am thinking about learning CW as well.

I have made a few contacts on the local repeater so far, and joined the local club as well.

73 de Kxxxxx   :) :)

8)!  Glad you've quickly been able to get on the local repeaters and get using your new license, and CW's always a worthwhile skill.  Any other "next steps" you're particularly interested in?

Good for you, now promise me you'll learn Morse Code the right way.  If you don't I'll come over there and hit you over the head with a hard salami.
No dots and dashes. Just the sound or you'll be like me stuck at 13 wpm. (or less).  :o

Congrats!
I want mine, but every time I look at anything HAM related, I get totally overwhelmed!
Then I hear things like... 7 year olds have them!??
How? I read about 5 pages in and they started talking all this technical jargon, and I was lost.
I've downloaded practice tests, and am completely confused.

What am I missing?

An Elmer, that is a mentor.  If you contact a local ham club they can generally find you someone to work with. Many also have free group classes.

But if that is not an option, you can simply learn the correct answers to the technician's exam by rote memory.  There are apps that help with that.   Then you can learn the actual meanings as you get hands on.

There is very little technical data to know to pass the TECHNICIAN test and it is more on what bands you would use and typical operating procedures with no real equations or secret handshakes ....those come later with the more advanced tests as you learn and upgrade your capability.

IIRC, the only math required for the tech test is for figuring out antenna lengths or frequency/wavelength conversion. I don't recall anything more complex than that.

Agree.  If I could pass the Tech test while pregnant and full time mom to a 2.5 year old (24 years ago), it's not too difficult.

Yes, it looks really imposing, but it can be done.

If you dont have access to a local club (slim chance) I just tell folks to pick up the Gordo book.  It runs you through every question with a brief explanation, in a conversational tone, without too much techno-babble.  Then take the online practice tests over and over until you get consistent 90%+ scores.

That's the one I studied with years ago.  I'm actually ordering it again because I've forgotten more than I remember.  Plus, I can give it to my son so he can use it when I'm done.

I used the QRZ on line practice Ham tests to get good in a hurry as they are FREE and easy to self learn...you register so your test practice can better follow your needs as you do not need to be a Ham to study there.

You need to know Ohms Law and how to determine Wattage, a little schematic work, and the rest is memorizing the questions. I used the app for my phone from the ARRL website, free from the google store IIR.  Just run thru the test a bunch of times,,, like cramming for the finals, and give it a try. It's only 15 bucks to try!

Good luck.

Give my "Start Here" page a look : http://hamradio360.com/index.php/start-here/ therein you'll find links, suggestions, even a podcast episode where I break it all down and ensure you ANY one can pass!  Hope it helps!

www.hamexam.org is another good one. I think that website uses an adaptive test, meaning it brings up more of the types of questions you get wrong and fewer of the types you usually get right. I could be wrong though...it may be a different site that I'm thinking of. Either way, my mom and my wife took a 1.5 day class and got their technician's tickets. It's really not that difficult to pass the tech test.  :)

congrats.  Inevitably you'll start to tinker with stuff, and that's where some of the technical background can help reduce the chance of tears :)
