A friend asked me about getting his license.....
« on: August 07, 2017, 11:39:27 AM »
It has been so long since I was licensed and so much has changed.  What is the best route for someone as far as studying for the Tech test.  Is there one really good go-to?

Yep; there are a few websites out there that let you run / practice all of the questions in the ham example test pool.
https://www.hamradiolicenseexam.com/

However, I would recommend that a good basic book be used to provide a big picture of why they asked the questions they ask.

Tech exam is somewhat easy and if you have the background, common sense questions.

When selecting a reference book it is best for it to match up with the current published question pool for when they take the test.  Every so many years the question pool is changed to reflect current practices.  And yes, they do publish all of the questions and answers for each exam.

I was a little embarrassed that I didn't readily know where to send him and their is 5 billion places on the internet that says theirs is the best way.  I got licensed so long ago they weren't even teaching history in school. ;)

That's correct as you don't need to know WHY,as long as you know the right answer...why comes later through reading and experience.

I had good luck by reading Ham Radio for Dummies to get the big overall picture, studying using KB6NU's No-Nonsense study guides (http://www.kb6nu.com/study-guides/, and he gives away a pdf of the Tech study guide free at his site), and then practicing at the free qrz.com link Carl gave.

Passed through General pretty easily that way, but I've got a background (some would say a "criminal history") in electronics.  If your friend doesn't, the ARRL study guides might help.  After that, a hands-on class taught by a local ham club really connects for some people.
