While buying groceries, I bought and extra can of red beans and tomato sauce to add to my food storage. I store them temporarily in a gray tub along with other items I buy on other days. Every time I go to my property, I grab the tub and rotate my stock. The same tub works well to bring back into town items or food that was rotated out. This has been the most inexpensive way of saving food that I have been able to come up with.

Wrote a one-pager "how to find info on AM/FM/SW" to slip in with some emergency radios I'm giving for Christmas presents this year.  Packed my new BOB radio into the bag

I rotated the gasoline stores and picked up a few extra items on sale at the grocery store.

I also purchased multiples of several items we use on a regular basis. The shelves are starting to fill up nicely.  8)

Bought seven cases of canning jars that were on sale at Tractor Supply. Awaiting my gauge to get back from the extension agent so I can start canning. The heat and little rain we have gotten has my tomatoes, peppers, and cucumbers start producing again.

Making apple sauce as i type this.  So excited.  With the price of gas going down I am rotating the stored fuel into the vehicle and replenishing at this lower price.

The wife was out to dinner with some friends last night so I took the opportunity to try-out some of my Mountain entrees with my two young daughters (8yr & 5yr).  I spent the time showing them what the food looks like dry, how to add the water, etc.  I kept the teaching very simple that daddy just keeps this type of food around just in case we ever get hungry and need a quick meal.  BTW, they absolutely loved it and told Mommy in bed this morning what they had for dinner last night.  "It was sooooo good mommy".  You should try it sometime.   ;)

I have been working 55-60 hours a week for the past month so I have not done much. I did not plant a winter garden, so I put everything to rest today.

I turned the "Jack Spirko" trash can compost pile today. It should be ready for spring time.

I placed an order for Theis IWB holster and gun belt. Now that it is "winter" in Houston, I need some way to carry with pants on instead of shorts. ;-) The fanny pack is just too obvious.

I am seriously considering a AR-15 purchase this weekend. I have raised the idea with my wife twice met with silence. That equal consent in my book. ;-)

Finally did something Steven Harris suggested on the show a few weeks back...found out that a local brewing supply company sells the 15gal plastic barrels every now and then.  I bought one for $18.  It still had a bit of malt syrup in the bottom.  I used my pressure washer to clean it out.  Today I fillled it up with gas to have on hand for our generator.

At the very least, keep them cool and out of the sun.

Do they have any DOT markings on them like: 1H1/Y1.8/150?

The Y and 150 are important. If the number is 100, I would be cautions. If it is 200, that is even better.

More here on this subject.

Yesterday: FINALLY purchased a good, sturdy metal storage rack at Walmart. Also picked up a six-gallon water container and some sanitation supplies.

Today: Practiced making beer bread for friends that are coming over this afternoon. Later, I'll assemble the storage rack and organize my canned food stash.

I'm getting so many great ideas from this thread. There are so many small, practical steps we can make every day! I'm finding that going from grasshopper to ant is a steady, ongoing process.

Working on what is turning out to be some righteous beef soup . . .

Started by cutting 8 slices of bacon in to bits and frying them crispy
Added that to a pot of water (guessing about 8 - 10 cups)
Cut a large homegrown sirloin steak in to small pieces
Fried that in the bacon fat until almost burnt and added that meat to the pot
Added about a tablespoon of some spicy beef bouillon that Cedar gave me
Added a squirt of worcestershire sauce
Added a couple dashes of some local pinot noir
A pinch of salt
Diced a few sprigs of cellery
Diced two onions
Diced a whole bunch of mushrooms

It's been simmering for about an hour and oh man does it taste good.

What else should I add to it, any suggestions? . . . .  I'm thinking about adding a couple diced potatoes and a few diced carrots about 30 minutes before I serve it.

Bought 140v Power Inverter to prepare for Sandy.  (Thanks to Jack Spirko and Steven Harris for the knowledge that a power inverter coupled with two cars that have full tanks equates to ~$30.00 generator)
http://www.walmart.com/ip/PowerLine-140W-Inverter-with-USB-Port/17134648

Got some extra water, beans, rice, TP, and Uno card game with normal groceries.
Checked the flashlights and lanterns to ensure we had light.
Put away outdoor furniture in shed and flipped kids trampoline on it's top (hoping it doesn't blow away).

Just a suggestion or two

caramelize the onions in the pan after you cook the bacon and beef.

deglaze the pan you cook the bacon, beef and onions in with the wine.

Thanks, I'll try that next time.  But the way i did it this time sure was good.  I finished up with about 4 carrots and a handful of rice.

Have my first slow cooker recipe going right now.
Dehydrating jalepenos to make my own seasoning powder.
Had the first two mugs of mint tea from leaves harvested in my own yard and dried. Definitely worth more mugs!

Explained to my brother what prepping is and more importantly what it is not. Explained when and why I started down this road. Played Episode 0001 for him and introduced him to the TSP. I think he might be switched on. Time will tell.  ;)

I always wanted a camp stove but was waiting until later in the season in hopes of getting one on sale.  With Frankenstorm on the way I managed to snag the last dual-fuel Coleman on the shelf.

Started compiling my "13 in 2013" skills list.

Refilled the deer feeders.

Updated my list of food preps still needed (or need more of). Best part: my wife helped me based on what she has been using and will need in the future.

Pressure canning meat for the first time. Ground beef. Assuming everything seals, it really wasn't hard at all. I just needed to make sure I ran through all the steps in my head a bunch of times & got everything ready and in place before I started. I can't wait to do chicken, which should be easier since I can do raw pack.
Other than that, we're all ready for hurricane sandy here in central nj. It's just started raining about 5 minutes ago.....

I showed my daughter how to can. The grandkids even got into turning the apple peeler. We canned 4 quarts of apple sauce and 4 quarts of apple wedges. She was impressed how eaie it was to put some good food on the shelf for little cost. Little steps at a time, she will be a prepper too!

I went to the gun range today and shot horribly. With the 10/22 at 25 yards...blah. I cannot figure out where to hold to hit the target...always hitting low and right. Needs a lot of work. I shot so much better the last time out at 50 yards.

I then went over to the 10 yard pistol range. I decided to try something new. Instead of warming up with some slow and easy shots, I just pick up the gun off the bench and shoot. (cannot draw on this range) blah and double blah. 3 of 7 actually within the 7 ring..shooting low right. So, if I am that bad in easy conditions, how bad will I be under pressure?

I was going to buy a M&P15 (S&W Optics Ready AR-15). on the way home from the range, but just canceled that. If I cannot shoot what I have now with any effectiveness, why bother getting another $1000 club? So, I bought more 9 mm and more .22 ammo instead and am googling around for training classes.

So, I am going to put some ammo in the car so I can go by the range on the way home from work once a week for awhile.
