Yaesu VX-7R Actually 2 of em
« on: September 17, 2009, 01:28:00 AM »
Today Sis went to Disneyland with her mother. On the way there she stopped by the Ham Radio Outlet in Anaheim and picked up 2 Yaesu VX-7R radios.

They are very nice, but holy shit the manual is very intimidating! I played with it a bit tonight but it has so many features it is going to take a while to learn everything.

Now we just need to wait for our call signs, should be any day.

We had two friends that tested since we did and they already got their call signs. WTF?  ???

Slow process for us but we are getting there.

:)  I do love my hubby.  Gotta spoil him every now and then, otherwise why the heck would he want me around?  ;D

How much were they? Yeah they have so many functions it is easy to get lost in the manual.

TW and Sis,

First of all, congrats!  You will like those radios!

Secondly, since I helped throw you guys into the quagmire that is the VX-7R, I will offer this:  I only regularly use about 20% of what my VX-7R will do.  Once you learn the basics of the dual channel monitoring, memory mode and basic channel programming, that will probably serve you most of the time.  The rest of it, I have to refer back to the manual.  It is nice to have the extra capabilities though and is fun to experiment and tinker with at times.

With taxes, a little over $300 a piece.

I've had one since they came out, has gone overseas a few times, and has lived up to expectations.

Well worth the money and when you add enough accessories to get full utility (battery packs, speaker/mike, perhaps a rapid charger) they really shine.

Have the cable to program from a PC and that makes it a LOT easier to use.

Congrats on the HT's & the callsigns, BTW. ;)

After the DW and I take the Tech and General tests (and pass) the plan is to purchase 2 VX-7R's to start out our Ham journey.

Also check out the Kenwood tri-band HT.  I forget the exact name, but from what my friend Master Guns says, it's a very good radio.  VERY good.

Thanks for gettin' my six, Dev.  ;D  I was down at the hospital with my papa earlier, and Master Guns texted me to let me know that they'd shown up in the system.  It made me giggle when TW read your post (the one I just quoted) to me earlier when I was still down at the hospital.  I was like, "holy cow, we had an army doing checks for us!"  :D

Made me feel very fuzzy inside to know that beneath your tough, warrior exterior, you care JUST a little bit.  *teases you*  ;D ;D ;D

I'm linked up to a repeater right now, listening to people talk to each other in Las Vegas, NV and Sacramento, CA.

Totally awesome.

Don't be shy and throw out your call sign...Don't get to fancy just talk like you were on a phone. You will do fine. Give it a try...

Mine is out of the box for 24 hrs now.  Lots to learn.  Can get the weather, some fm broadcast, a few repeatetrs set up, and someone is about to have their door broken down by the police.  Powerful radio.

I've have the VX-7r for several years.  It's a great little radio although I've changed antennas a few times.  I use VX7 Commander and cable for programming it.  It's much nicer to type in the repeater info on the computer and then download it all.  ;)

What antenna has been your favorite and why?
