signal mirror
« on: November 09, 2008, 09:09:29 AM »
Whist's hiking with my friend in Scotland he reached into his back pack to grab a snack and pulled out his hand covered in blood. He had a mirror for signaling and it had broke in his bag. Fortunately the cut wasn't bad enough to rush him to Hospital and he was ok. Signal mirrors are meant to be tough but i think he had just an ordinary mirror!
Ever since i've used a CD in my pack as its tough, highly reflective, light and in this case free as it came with a newspaper!

Cheers
Mac

Hmmmmmm...

That's got me thinking..

How about a piece of 1/16" -  1/8" polished aluminum or maybe stainless steel with nice rounded corners.

I just may have to dig thru my scrap pile and make up a couple.

Thanks for the heads up though...

This is the one I carry made my Adventure Medical.  It is a LEXAN® polycarbonate mirror so it wont break.  As with any product YMMV.

Plus 1 to what GroundPounder recommended. You can even pick them up at walmart in the camping section for ~$1 dollar. I pulled mine out of the BOB and to take a picture of it and... oh god... I am so startled!!! (south park reference)

The good ones from Adventure Medical run in the $7.00 - $9.00 range.  They are the best I have seen.  They are at Dicks, REI, Sportsmans Warehouse, etc.  Never seen them at Wal-Mart, only the cheapo ones.

Actually I would go for the full Adventure Medical Survival Kit that has the mirror plus a lot of other goodies in it.  I carry one in my ECB.

I've seen the more expensive ones online. I'm always torn between cheap and more expensive but better quality... Time to shell out a few extra $s.

Modern plastics being what they are there is no good reason to have anything made of glass in your bag. Personally I carry the polycarbonate one in GroundPounders post.

Uses for a mirror that spring to mind (other than signaling):

- Recon (you can scout out locations behind shelter 28 Weeks Later-style.)
- Self-applied first aid (it's impossible to see your own face, and other areas are tricky w/o a mirror)
- Roasting ants and beetles :P

Just for a heads up, some of the companies are having quality control issues and some are just ripping folks off.
